Kelsey Martin, M.S., CCC-SLP

Welcome! I'm so glad you're here. I'm Kelsey, the founder, owner, and therapist behind Playful Communication, PLLC. I am licensed in North Carolina and certified through the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. I graduated summa cum laude with both a B.A. (2012) and M.S. (2014) in speech-language pathology from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

I have worked with children and their families in a variety of settings, including homes, daycares, preschools/HeadStart centers, and multi-disciplinary clinics. Throughout my career, I have worked closely and co-treated with educators, pediatric physical and occupational therapists, and developmental therapists. I've gained a wealth of knowledge from their expertise and am so grateful for the opportunities I've had to work alongside such gifted professionals. I have experience working with children with autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, hearing impairment, developmental delays, behavioral disorders, rare genetic syndromes, neurological impairment, cognitive impairment, childhood apraxia of speech, fluency disorders, and articulation/phonological disorders.

My husband and I moved to Waxhaw in July 2018. We absolutely love being a part of this community! We have two kiddos, Isaac (age 6) and Rae (21 months). I-Man joined our family through the gift of adoption in 2017. He has Down syndrome and totally rocks that extra chromosome. He has taught me more than any degree can offer. I understand the joys and challenges of having a child with special needs, and that perspective has been invaluable when working with my families. Our sweet girl, Rae, is giving me a new outlook on speech and language development as I watch her grow and learn. My kiddos are such a gift, and I'm so thankful to be their momma.

In my free time, you'll find me loving on my family, serving alongside my husband in ministry, or cuddling with Brody (our most beloved pooch).

Evidence-based practice, early intervention, play-based learning, family involvement and education

I strive to stay informed on current research and regularly engage in continuing education to ensure I provide up-to-date evidenced-based treatment. Therapy is driven by research and the child's interests and needs.

I enjoy working with all age groups and diagnoses, but I am especially passionate about serving the birth-5 population and those with speech sound disorders. Early intervention (through a family-centered approach) is powerful! The earlier that services are delivered, the more likely children are to develop effective communication, language, and achieve successful learning outcomes (Guralnick, 2011).

I am professional when duty calls, but I often say I'm a 5-year-old at heart. I am a firm believer in the power of play! Play is such an important part of a child's learning and development. I encourage growth and learning through playing with purpose. Therapy is hard work, but I aim to make learning fun and enjoyable for both the kiddos and their caregivers. Our sessions are active and typically filled with lots of laughter.

I believe caregivers play an integral role in therapy and always encourage caregiver participation. My hope is that you walk away from each session feeling empowered, equipped, and encouraged. No one can love your children like you can; you are perfect for them! I hope to partner with you in helping you support your child as he or she becomes a confident communicator.
