our process

  • Do you accept insurance?
    Yes! Ultimately, the family is responsible for payment, but we are happy to submit claims to insurance as a courtesy. Playful Communication is enrolled with NC Medicaid, (including the following MCOs: Carolina Complete, Healthy Blue, AmeriHealth Caritas, United Healthcare Community Plan, and WellCare). We are in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC, Aetna, and MedCost. We also accept self payment.
  • What if you don't accept my insurance?
    If we do not accept your insurance, we would be considered an "out-of-network provider," and you would be a self-paying client. However, insurance may still help you out! Call the number on the back of your card and inquire about your out-of-network benefits. These are some good questions to ask: Do I have out-of-network speech therapy benefits? Am I eligible to receive direct reimbursement from the insurance company for my speech therapy visits? What percentage of the money I paid at my speech therapy visit will you, the insurance company, reimburse? Do I have an out-of-network deductible to meet first? We will provide you with a detailed receipt called a "super bill" upon request that contains all the necessary information for families to submit to insurance for reimbursement or credit towards a deductible.
  • Is speech therapy covered by insurance?
    That's a great question. Coverage depends on your individual plan + your child's diagnosis. We will try our best to figure that out before therapy begins, but we always suggest our families call the number on the back of their card and stay well-informed about their individual benefits. Insurance is a contract between the family and insurance company. We have no say in coverage, we simply submit claims as a courtesy!
  • How does this insurance stuff work?
    Dealing with insurance can be so confusing! Nobody teaches you this stuff. We have compiled a detailed guide about this whole "insurance thing" that outlines the process so you have a better idea of what to expect. We are happy to provide this at the evaluation and answer any questions! We will also verify your benefits prior to services and give you our best guess as to what and how much might be covered. You can (and should) do this too by calling the number on the back of your card! Of course, this is not a guarantee of payment. They will determine coverage upon review of the claim, and we don't always know what they'll decide.
  • How much does it cost?
    Shoot us an email at, and we'll send you our fee schedule! We also offer a sliding fee scale and operate with a "pay what you can" mindset. If the financial investment seems too great, please reach out. We are happy to chat through options and create a plan that works for everyone.
  • What forms of payment do you accept?
    We accept cash, check, card, and HSA, either for self payment or your portion of the session after insurance coverage.
